The timing belt is a critical component in an engine that connects the crankshaft to the camshaft, ensuring the engines valves open and close at the correct times during each cylinders intake and exhaust strokes. The crankshaft moves the pistons up and down, while the camshaft controls the intake and exhaust valves. Proper synchronisation allows the air-fuel mixture to enter the combustion chamber, be ignited by the spark plug, and then expel exhaust gases efficiently. Without this precise timing, the engine cannot run correctly and may suffer severe damage.
A broken or worn timing belt can cause catastrophic engine failure.
It is generally recommended to replace timing belts between 60,000 and 1000,000 miles depending on the vehicle model.
In some engines the timing belt may also drive other components such as the water pump, oil pump, or injection pump which further emphasises the importance of maintaining overall engine function.
